Today, the Tuskers continue to carry forward a legacy built on one belief: even a small act of service can create a lasting impact
The story of organized community service through Lions in Sri Lanka began in 1958, with the establishment of the first Lions Club in Colombo. What began as a small group of individuals committed to serving their communities gradually grew into a nationwide movement. Through decades of dedication, Lions Clubs expanded their work across healthcare, education, humanitarian assistance, vision care, disaster relief, and community development.
As more communities embraced the spirit of Lionism, new clubs emerged across the island. The movement developed its own districts and administrative structure as membership and service activities continued to grow.
For generations, Lions have provided more than financial or material assistance. Their work has been about identifying community needs, bringing people together, and turning compassion into action.
More than six decades after the first club was established, Lions continue to serve communities throughout Sri Lanka. The needs of society may change, but the fundamental idea remains the same
In 1957, the Leo movement was born internationally when the first Leo Club was established in the United States. The idea was simple but powerful: give young people the opportunity to serve, lead, learn and grow. The Leo program was officially adopted by Lions Clubs International in 1967, creating a youth-focused extension of the Lions movement.
In 1969, the first Leo Club in Sri Lanka was established. This marked the beginning of a new chapter in youth service. Young people were given a platform to transform their enthusiasm and ideas into meaningful community action. From that beginning, Leoism gradually spread across schools, universities and communities throughout Sri Lanka.
